SCOTT HOVAN, LVAC Assistant Coach

Scott returns to the wrestling program this Fall, after originally serving three years as a Lehigh assistant coach from 1998-2001. He’ll assist the LVAC in various key roles, including fund-raising, event promotion and also help with the recruiting and training of youth wrestlers for the Club’s area clinics. Since 2000, he has served as health teacher for Milford Middle School in the Quakertown Community School District. He was an assistant wrestling coach at Quakertown HS for five years and Head Coach for a year at Milford Middle School. While coaching Parkland HS, Scott coached Nick Guida to a PA state title. Hovan is also Head Coach and Director of the Gladiator Wrestling Club (where John Bolich trained), with locations in Quakertown and Emmaus, and is a commentator for SECTV2 Sports wrestling.

As a Pitt Panther, Scott was an NCAA 6th and 4th in 1991-92. In both tournaments, he lost in the semis to 4-time NCAA champ, Pat Smith, Okla. St, the first time by 5-4. A top student at Pitt, he was elected to the Wrestling Hall of Fame of Allen High School (where he won two PIAA titles), District 11 Hall of Fame, and EWL Hall of Fame.  Following college graduation, Scott was an assistant to Pitt mentor, Rande Stottlemyer. He then worked one year as assistant coach and health/phys ed teacher at Hermitage HS, Richmond, VA (1994-95), before serving in the same roles at Methacton HS, in Norristown, PA between 1995–2000.  From 1998-01, Hovan was a 3-year assistant to Greg Strobel who headed up Lehigh’s recruiting in a tenure that helped land future seven All-Americans who earned 17 NCAA medals: Jon Trenge, Troy Letters, Cory Cooperman, Brad Dillon, Mario Stuart, Derek Zinck and Travis Frick (note: NCAA rules limit direct roles by Club coaches in college recruiting).

Scott holds a master’s of science in educational leadership (2011 from Wilkes U) and a master’s in computer education (2004, from DeSales U). He and wife Shelly currently reside in Allentown and have two children, Cole (7) and Kendra (2).
